Weedon Architects and Calthorpe Academy come together for RIBA Learning Programme

19th July 2019

As part of the RIBA's Learning Programme Weedons have been working in partnership with SEN students at Calthorpe Academy to create an abstract 3D “skyline” of Birmingham.

Following an introduction to architecture and the role of the architect, students took part in a fun icebreaker challenge to construct abstract models from scrap materials and masking tape.  These were passed from one student to the next to further develop and make even more precarious!  Subsequent workshops focused on the creation of a much larger 3D collage of Birmingham’s  skyline featuring some of its best known landmarks such as Selfridges (or the “purple pearl building” as it became known by the students) and the Rotunda.

At the last workshop we all worked together to add the final touches to the model;  include trees, cars and people – bringing the model city to life.

This partnership has been extremely rewarding for both ourselves and Calthorpe Academy.  We hope to see the 3D model in our studio soon, and look forward to working with the school and the RIBA Ambassador workshop again in the future.
